Memories at Sea: A Family Holiday on the Icon of the Seas

Trade in tinsel and traditions for sun-soaked adventures, unforgettable memories, and gluten-free pizza perfection! Our family embarked on a weeklong Christmas cruise aboard Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, proving that holiday magic is just as real on the high seas. From a cozy morning at South Beach to Perfect Day bliss at CocoCay, every moment was filled with laughter, delicious eats, and a bit of holiday sparkle.

Pre-Cruise Comfort in South Beach

Before embarking, we stayed at the Marriott Stanton South Beach, greeted warmly with sangria and a smile. Although we arrived late and missed out on exploring the hotel fully, the amazing location and attentive staff made up for it. Dinner came courtesy of Brea from Bodega Boyz. Cameron and Brea raved about their delicious sandwiches: the Don Fuego and Big City Caesar. These were such a hit that they’re already dreaming of a return trip to Miami just for another taste!

Setting Sail: Our Family Cruise Begins

For us, the holidays have taken on a new meaning. Instead of traditional celebrations, we travel, creating memories that outshine material gifts. Accompanied by Ryan, Brea, Natalie, and even Memaw and Pepaw, our group embraced the joy of being together.

This was our second time aboard the Icon of the Seas, and it felt like coming home. With the drink package in hand and spirits high, we couldn’t wait to explore everything the ship had to offer.

Gluten-Free Dining Highlights

As someone navigating life with Celiac Disease, cruising can be tricky, but the Icon of the Seas went above and beyond. Gluten-free pizza from Sorrento’s was a game-changer—it was so good I made a video about it! Pro tip: ask for a whole pie; you won’t regret it.

The dining staff across the ship, from the main dining room to the island stops, ensured my meals were safe and delicious. My favorite? A gluten-free burger on a brioche bun at CocoCay. The Udi’s cookies were a delightful surprise too!

Iconic Fun Onboard

Our days were packed with entertainment and relaxation. Highlights included:

  • Carl’s Magic Tricks at the Schooner Bar: A master illusionist who had us all stumped with his card tricks and amazing drinks.
  • Prasheen & Ro in the dining room: Not just servers—they wowed us with magic tricks too!

Perfect Day at CocoCay

CocoCay lived up to its name with beautiful weather and plenty to do. This year, we splurged on the new adult-only Hideaway Beach, which offered a peaceful retreat with infinity pools and swim-up bars. While the $77 per person price tag felt steep (especially compared to the pre-cruise rate of $33), it was a nice escape from the hustle and bustle.

We braved the 75-degree water with inflatable rafts I’d packed, but eventually, the warmth of the pool won us over. The drink package carried over to the island, so the rum punches flowed freely as we soaked in the views.

Final Thoughts

This Christmas cruise on Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas was another unforgettable chapter in our family’s holiday tradition. From delicious gluten-free meals, including the must-try pizza at Sorrento's, to unique Hideaway Beach adventures, every moment reinforced why we prioritize experiences over gifts.

While the change to one drink per order and no doubles was a minor inconvenience, it didn’t detract from the joy of exploring, relaxing, and creating memories. Pro tip: bringing an inflatable raft was a game-changer for enjoying the water.

The memories made during this cruise are ones we’ll cherish forever, and they remind us of the true value of time spent together as a family. Here’s to many more adventures, laughter, and gluten-free treats on future journeys!
